As Gotcha Day approaches it’s time to get everything ready at home. When one of our babies joins your family, we want you to be set up for success. To help, we’ve put together this preparation checklist and a list of recommended items—things we personally use and swear by. Food and Nutrition We exclusively feed our pack Royal Canin. Royal Canin Bulldog Puppy (Dry) - Our puppies are fed Royal Canin Mother & Baby Dog Starter until 8 weeks old, but Royal Canin's Bulldog Puppy food is what they’ll be eating when they join your home, and what we continue to feed our puppies until they transition to Royal Canin Adult Bulldog . Specific Needs - Royal Canin has a number of targeted nutritional products as well, in case your puppy develops skin sensitivities or tummy issues down the road—which is not uncommon in bulldogs. Vitamins and Supplements We’ve recently added Ready Pet Go! products and the results have been impressive. Ready Pet Go! Skin and Coat Omega-3 - We have noticed a visible improvement in coat health—shinier, softer, and healthier overall. It’s become a simple but effective part of keeping our bulldogs looking and feeling their best. Ready Pet Go! Hip & Joint Mobility - bulldogs are naturally prone to hip and joint issues as they age. This daily vitamin supports long-term joint health and mobility, helping our pack stay active, comfortable, and playful well into adulthood. Grooming English Bulldogs are prone to skin sensitivities and environmental allergies. A good rule of thumb: only use unscented products made for sensitive skin. Shampoo & Conditioner - puppies are bathed with Aquaphor Baby Shampoo & Body Wash . For adult dogs, we use Bodhi Organic Oatmeal Dog Shampoo & Conditioner a gentle hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner made with organic ingredients. For any skin inflammation, rashes, or flare-ups: DOUXO S3 PYO Shampoo and Mousse Mal-A-Ket Wipes Mal-A-Ket Ear Flush For daily grooming, here’s our go-to toolkit: Baby Wipes (Unscented) - We use Kirkland Signature but any water-based, fragrance-free wipe for sensitive skin will do. PetMD XL Chlorhexidine Wipes - New to our arsenal and quickly becoming one of favorite products. We use them for cleaning folds, tail pockets, post-surgery grooming, and keeping our pack's faces smelling fresh. Squishface Wrinkle Paste – for folds, tear stains, and general face funk Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair and Aquaphor – works wonders on noses to keep them soft and free from cracking Lotrimin – yep, the same one you find in the human section; it’s perfect for yeast in folds and paws If you already have a bulldog, you know: miss a day or two of grooming, and it shows. But don’t panic—these products will get your pup back on track quickly. Health Bravecto – for fleas and ticks, with added coat health benefits Heartgard – for heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm prevention Canned Pumpkin – always keep some on hand. A tablespoon with meals helps with tummy upset or diarrhea Purina FortiFlora – excellent probiotic support for digestion. Cytopoint – if your puppy develops environmental allergies, these shots will greatly improve your bulldog's quality of life. Beds, Boxes & Toys We don’t have a specific brand recommendation for dog beds, but whatever you choose, look for one with a washable, waterproof cover. If you’re crate training, prepare for beds to get shredded—English Bulldogs are intense chewers. The same goes for toys. It’s fine to give them ropes, tennis balls, stuffed animals, and squeaky toys BUT only under supervision. Bulldogs will gut and eat anything. For unsupervised time, we only trust Benebone Chew Collection and Dentley's® Nature's Chews Large Filled Femur Bone . Crates & Containment At this age, they’re too young for crate training, so you’ll need a safe enclosure. We our whelping box . The most important thing is choosing something that is easy to clean. Think smooth, white or light colored walls, free of tiny nooks and crevices. When you are ready to transition to crate training, avoid grated bottom enclosures. It's simple, if it would be painfully uncomfortable for you to spend the night on, then it's not going to be comfortable for them either. Questions? But with their unique looks comes a lot of misinformation—and a fair amount of controversy. Let’s break down the facts and answer some of the most common questions we receive about the merle coat in Bulldogs. Can the Merle Gene Occur Naturally in English Bulldogs? No. The merle gene is not naturally occurring in the traditional English Bulldog breed standard. This pattern is the result of introducing the merle gene through outcrossing—usually with other bully breeds like French Bulldogs or American Bulldogs. Over time, breeders have selectively bred back to English Bulldogs to produce merle dogs that meet the physical and temperament traits of the breed. If the Merle Gene Isn’t Natural, How Can a Dog Be 100% English Bulldog by DNA? Great question—and one that confuses a lot of people. DNA breed identification panels (like Embark or Wisdom Panel) look at breed-informative genetic markers, not coat color genes like merle. If a merle dog has enough of the breed markers associated with English Bulldogs, it can still return as “100% English Bulldog,” especially after several generations of breeding back into the line. So yes, it’s entirely possible for a dog to genetically test as 100% English Bulldog while still carrying the merle gene—because the test is looking at breed lineage, not color mutations. Do Merle English Bulldogs Have More Health Issues? This is where things get tricky. Merle itself is not inherently dangerous in single-dose (heterozygous) form. However, breeding two merle dogs together is where things go seriously wrong. This is known as a double merle breeding, and it significantly increases the risk of serious health defects, especially involving vision and hearing. Double merle puppies can be born blind, deaf, or with severely underdeveloped eyes (a condition called microphthalmia), among other serious issues. For this reason, ethical breeders never breed merle to merle . When bred responsibly—only pairing a merle to a non-merle—merle Bulldogs can be just as healthy as their standard-colored siblings. But it’s crucial to understand the genetics and breed responsibly to avoid catastrophic outcomes. What Should Buyers Know Before Getting a Merle English Bulldog? Ask for DNA Testing – Make sure the breeder has done full DNA testing, including coat color and genetic health panels. Verify Parent Pairing – A reputable breeder will be transparent and never pair two merles together. Avoid Backyard Breeders – If the price seems too good to be true, or the breeder won’t show documentation, walk away. Understand Breed Standards – Merle is not recognized by the AKC for conformation showing, but they can still be registered as purebred pets. So, Are Merle Bulldogs "Bad"? Not at all—but they do require educated, ethical breeding practices and informed buyers. The merle coat is striking, rare, and can be perfectly healthy if the breeder knows what they’re doing and prioritizes the well-being of the dogs. English Bulldogs are one of the most expensive and challenging breeds to whelp. They’re also among the most charming companions you’ll ever meet. It’s easy to understand why someone might be tempted by the idea of breeding them. After all, what could be more delightful than a house full of wrinkly, roly-poly puppies? Trust us—we understand the appeal. But what many people don’t realize is just how complex, risky, and emotionally demanding breeding English Bulldogs truly is. It Starts With Timing—and Lots of Testing From the moment your female enters heat, progesterone (PG) testing begins. This testing is used to pinpoint ovulation and ensure you inseminate at the optimal time. Most veterinary clinics charge $80–$120 per test, and you may require several days of testing. It's not unusual to spend $800–$1,000 just in this phase. Even then, success is not guaranteed. Few clinics offer reproductive services. You’ll also be working within the availability of your chosen reproductive vet. If your female’s numbers spike on a weekend or holiday when the clinic is closed, you will miss the cycle entirely—and have to wait another 5 to 7 months to try again. If insemination is successful, the pregnancy lasts approximately 63 days. Around day 58, daily PG testing resumes. This time, the focus is on predicting the onset of labor. English Bulldogs cannot safely deliver naturally due to their anatomy, so a scheduled C-section is mandatory. C-section costs can vary widely. A routine surgical delivery may cost around $2,500 at a clinic. But if labor begins after hours, you may be facing an emergency C-section upward of $8,000, depending on location and availability. Many clinics close on weekends, and veterinary surgeons may only be available a few days a week, making this time incredibly stressful. Even under the best circumstances, breeding can be tough on the mother, and there’s always a risk she may not survive. You need to be prepared to tube feed the puppies in case of an emergency. Bulldog Puppies Cannot Survive Without You Newborn English Bulldogs cannot be left alone with their mother. Her size and limited mobility can easily lead to accidental injury or suffocation. Human intervention is not just recommended—it is essential. The puppies will require an incubator for the first 3–4 weeks to maintain warmth, humidity, and (optionally) oxygen. They are unable to regulate their own body temperature, and even mild drafts can cause fatal hypothermia. You will need to feed and stimulate the puppies every two hours, around the clock, for the first two weeks. This is not a one-person job. You’ll need help to adhere to a strict schedule to prevent hypoglycemia, which can be fatal in a matter of hours. These factors contribute to the breed’s 30–40% mortality rate in puppies. Serious Risks to the Litter Caring for newborn bulldogs requires constant vigilance. Even the smallest mistake or delay can lead to devastating outcomes. Common risks include: Aspiration pneumonia from inhaling milk during feeding Swimmer’s syndrome where flat surfaces cause chest deformities Suffocation, infections, dehydration, and congenital defects Bulldog puppies cannot be placed on flat, hard surfaces. You’ll need to line their incubator with egg crate foam and layers of soft bedding to prevent developmental issues that could impact breathing and feeding. Every aspect of their care must be proactive, precise, and monitored. Emergency veterinary care should always be available, and minor concerns must be treated with urgency. These puppies are incredibly fragile. And This Is Just the Beginning Breeding English Bulldogs is not for the faint of heart. It’s physically exhausting, emotionally draining, and financially demanding. This is not a casual undertaking, and it’s not for those hoping for an “easy” introduction to breeding. For all of these reasons, we only partner with experienced breeders.
